10 Body Language Tips for Success

10 Body Language Tips for SuccessYou can talk a good game, but if you dont back it up with body language that says, Im confident and know what Im talking about, theres a good chance you wont get the professional consideration you deserve. Think of body language as an extension of your work dress code. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) These 10 tips will help you perfect that extra layer of confidence in interviews, meetings, or conversations with colleagues.1. Dont slouch.Slumping is one of the biggest underminers of strong body language. It suggests youre disinterested or unkoranvers of yourself. So make sure you sit up straight, and keep those shoulders up and slightly back (leid hunched around your ears).2. Shake hands like a pro.The best handshake is strong, but doesnt crush. If you grip too tightly, it can be interpreted as a sign of aggression. If you barely grip at all, it suggests youre timid or afraid of confrontation. Extend your right hand to the shake-ee with your palm flat and perpendicular to the ground (with your thumb straight up if you need a guide to help you remember the stance). Do 2-3 hearty pumps, be sure to make eye contact while youre greeting the person, and then withdraw your hand. Dont linger too long, or it can get a little awkward.3. Unclench the fists. If you find yourself clenching your fists while talking to someone, loosen up. Clenched fists suggest anger or being closed off to the conversation, even if youre not doing it on purpose. Try to keep your hands loose. If you need something to occupy them, try taking notes, holding them casually in your lap, or keeping your arms relaxed at your sides. If youre looking to join a brawl, be sure to put those dukes up. In a normal conversation, not so much.4. Loosen those limbs.Crossed arms are a great way to say I dont want to be here or I dont want to hear what youre saying. They close you off from the person whos talking. Instead of crossing your arms, try to hold them loosely at your sides, elbows slightly bent, or hold them gently in your lap.5. The eyes have it.The right level of eye contact can be a toughie, especially if youre someone who has trouble with it due to shyness or whatever reason. Practice is really the key here. Spend time talking casually with a friend or family member and ask them questions about your level of eye contact. That way, you can find out what you may be doing unconsciously, and find a style thats comfortable for you.Blinking too much can indicate nervousness, while blinking too little can seem like an aggressive challenge to a staring contest. Try to find a middle groundand while talking with others, be conscious of your blink rate and how the other person is responding.6. Keep your emotions in check. No matter how annoying or wrong your coworkers statement may be, dont roll your eyes or let a scowl show on your face. Try to stay neutral while youre talking to the person. Vent later if you need to, but your facial expressions can show disrespect and sandbag your relationship with the person. Its especially important to keep a neutral expression if youre talking to a higher-up at work or an interviewer.7. Dont fidget.Personally, I find this one the hardestmy hands just want to be doing something all the time, whether Im hanging out and having a casual conversation or talking in a meeting. Moving your hands a lot or playing with your hair/watch/etc. can be distracting to the listener, and undermine what youre trying to say. If you need to be doing something, try taking notes. If it helps to keep your hands still, fold them in your lap or on the table in front of you.8. Dont be a bobblehead.Nodding too vigorously makes you look too anxious to agree or like youre agreeing to something without really listening.9. Face the music.Try to face the person youre talking to head-on. Turning away makes the person think youre disinterested or trying to hide something. Facing the p erson with good listening posture shows youre engaged in the conversation.10. Dont be a clockwatcher. If your eyes keep drifting over to the clock, the person youre talking to is likely to notice and feel either insulted or rushedneither which makes for a productive discussion. No matter what youre saying, your body language can betray (or bolster) your words. If you ooze confidence, calm, and competence, your words will carry so much more weight.

This Common Post-Grad Career Move Will Actually Hurt You, According to New Study

This Common Post-Grad Career Move Will Actually Hurt You, According to New Study Todays college graduates are facing a new conundrum More people than ever are earning degrees, but many of them arent using their (very expensive) educations.Instead of applying for jobs that require a college education, many graduates are taking jobs that dont right out of school, like bartending, driving for a ride-share app, or working at a coffee shop.Burning Glass Technologies, a job market analytics firm, and nonprofit Strada Institute for the Future of Workset out to answer just how harmful this decision is for new graduates. In order to understand howunderemploymentis affecting the most recent generation, they studied 4 million college graduates in the United States. They found that four in 10 new grads are currently underemployed.Overall, graduates who initially find themselves underemployed are five times mora likely to be underemployed in the future, compared to those who take a job requiring th eir degree right out of college. And of those underemployed grads, two-thirds will be working the exact same job in five years.Underemployment hits especially hard for women. More women than men start their post-grad lives underemployed (47 percent compared to 37 percent, respectively) and women are mora likely than men to stay underemployed in the future. This gender gap persists over time and holds true across every college major except engineering, the researchers wrote.Even in STEM fields like mathematics and engineering, which are traditionally perceived as reliable majors with lots of job availability, women are more likely to leave college and enter a job where they are underemployed. Why?According to the CEO of Burning Glass, Matt Sigelman, there are two possible reasons.First, female STEM students may not have the same mentor influence and opportunities as male STEM students.Avoiding underemployment after college takes a conscious strategy, he said. A strategy that female stu dents may not even be aware is necessary.Men may have stronger professional networks right out of school than women do, he continued. And, according to Sigelman, men are more likely to apply for jobs that may be above them, requiring higher skill level or more experience than they actually have.A man who has a few of the requirements, but not all, is likely to apply anyway, with the idea that he can learn on the job, he said. But women more often think theyre underqualified if they dont meet all the criteria. So they dont apply.Regardless of gender, underemployment is expensive. College graduates aged 22 to 27 working at a job that did not require their college degree earn $10,000 less each year than graduates who took jobs that require a degree.According to Sigelmanm, the rise in underemployment could be linked to a big shift among students in recent years away from the humanities into majors that sound more practical, but really arent. As well as youll figure it out later attitudes many colleges adopt when it comes to curriculum universities arent teaching the skills most employers are searching for in their job applications. Most students dont start to focus on what employers want until theyre well into their senior year, which is way too late.

4 keys to successful teamwork

4 keys to successful kollektivwork4 keys to successful kollektivworkEffective teamwork is the number one rule of an organizations success. It has many benefits such as increased productivity, improved work quality, increased employee morale and etc.Putting together a great team may seem like a simple task. Hire the best individuals and there you go Unfortunately, it doesnt work like that in the real world because making a group of different people work together in harmony is in fact a very difficult task. There are certain key elements to it. Below you can find 4 of them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOpen CommunicationCommunication is one of the most important aspects of team working. Team members must be able to say what they think, share their ideas, ask questions to their teammates. In addition, all team members must provide honest feedback to each other in order to grow as a team. It would be also very helpful for the team if all members try to get to know each other on a personal level.RespectTeam members are not supposed to like each other but they should show mutual respect. There may be conflicts between members of the team but the team leader should find a way to solve these conflicts. Also, every team member should have equal work load and should not try to impute his/her own share of the work to someone else. Additional ways of showing respect to members include arriving to meetings on time, being prepared for the meetings and listening to team members ideas even if you dont agree with them.CommitmentTeam members must be committed to the team. They should understand the overall goals and direction of the team as well as find out how they fit in to the overall structure of the team. Each team member can show his/her dedication to the team by going that extra mile or invest additional time and energy to really come up with innovative solutions t o their business problems.AdaptabilityBeing adaptable means pushing yourself out of the comfort zone to face with new situations and as a result, grow. Team members must be adaptable because they need to grow as an individual. Moreover, change is constant. For example a team member can change, a project can change or a client can change. Therefore, all of the team members must be flexible and keep calm when change happens. This article originally appeared on Personal Branding Blog. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Stay Motivated at Work

How to Stay Motivated at WorkHow to Stay Motivated at WorkHow to Stay Motivated at WorkHow to keep goin when the goin aint so great. In todays modern job market, candidates are in a position to be sold to. HR and Marketing are partnering together like never before and theyre creating branding initiatives and recruitment campaigns that are geared toward making you want to work there. As candidates, we interpret a job opportunity elend necessarily by what the employer does or says but in the way that we wish to interpret it. We apply our owncontext filters and might not really hear whats being said (or whats not being said). We may overlook clues in the interview stage that signal a rotten culture or flags that tell us leadership is a mess. Or, we might catch those clues and ignore them anyway. The truth is we want to buy into it. Whether you believe people like being sold to or they like buying, Id split the difference. We like the experience of shopping, and shopping for jobs isnt that different. We will hear what we want to hear from the recruiter or hiring manager and still make our own decisions about the place. This can and will result in disappointment, but dont worry. We all find ourselves in jobs that arent quite what we imagined. Because its work, its not always as simple as just finding a new job. We have bills to pay, mouths to feed, and really - its has to be pretty bad to quit after a month. My advice is always to tough it out for a year at least. When you find yourself in this situation, its really important that you know how to stay motivated at work.Sure, the job might be the pits. Bad culture. Poor leaders. A smorgasbord of un-dream-job-like qualities, but if youre going to be miserable on top of all that, youve got another thing coming. If youre feeling in the pits at work, you need to pull yourself out of it and get motivated. Heres how to stay motivated at work and what you do when the going got tough and youre feeling down and out each day. Here a re four self-motivation tips to live by1. Weigh the good.It might be cliche to say, but you need to start off by looking at the bright side. Optimism is going to be the coal in your fire itll keep your engine going and keep you warm. Sometimes you have to stretch yourself to find the good in a situation, but think of whats at stake - your livelihood. Work is where we spend the majority of our time and if we start having feelings of hopelessness there, it could be a slippery slope into depression. Thefacts are there and optimism is good for heart health, life expectancy and success. So how do you conjure up some optimism and self-motivation when the going gets tough? Make a list of everything that is alright with your job. Just write. It doesnt have to be a laundry list of amazing perks, but think about the stuff that is pretty good and start there. You can even start with number one Im employed. Being thankful for the everyday stuff like having a job, is a great way to shift your per spective. Just google your local unemployment rate and maybe youll feel a bit better.2. Spread the love. When the going gets tough and youre struggling to make yourself happy, try and make someone else happy. In astudy, researchers found that the more people participated in meaningful activities, the happier they were and the more purposeful their lives felt. This is all fine and dandy but how can you apply it at work? Find out what the pain points are and strive to abolish them. Help others out wherever you can. Be a source of positive energy for others. In everything you do, strive to be helpful. It could mean small acts of kindness around the office like refilling the kettle for the next guy or starting a social committee and planning some well-earned fun for your team. Whatever you do, ask yourself if its helpful to someone else and their joy will soon translate to your own.3. platzset some goals.Id take an aggressive growth plan and being overworked any day before a job with no p urpose or goals. Goals give us meaning and in work, they give us direction. We need a vision to be inspired and without that itll all start to feel pointless. If you find yourself in a situation like this youve got to take the bull by its horns Dont wait for someone to motivate you - try some self-motivation If the vision isnt set, set one. It doesnt have to be an impressive vision, linked to the corporate strategy and all of that. It can be a vision for you and your work. You can frame success within the context of your environment and what is within the scope of your control. Create your own goals, even if theyre small. Having goals and making progress on those goals makes ushappier so go out there and start setting some goals.4. Bask in the sun (when its out).Perspective is everything and gratitude is a big chunk of that. Its so important to realize, acknowledge and be thankful when things are good. Its a great way to know how to stay motivated at work. Being present makes us hap pier and critical to that is recognizing the positive. As much as recruiters are trying to tell us dream jobs exist, no job is perfect and there will be highs and lows. Using this information we must trigger ourselves (or better yet, pinch ourselves) when things are going good and relish in it a bit, soak it up. Why? Its going to pass. Hard times will come. Realize that and when the going is good, ride the wave happily.Because we spend 40 hours plus per week at work, its critical that you feel good when youre there. Feeling good starts with you, your perspectives, and attitude. Approach work with optimism, gratitude, and a desire to be helpful and youll have a foundation for a happier workplace.Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique today

1 in 5 women say they are only woman in the room at work

1 in 5 women say they are only woman in the room at work1 in 5 women say they are only woman in the room at workFor too many women at work, they are the only one of their kind at work, a unique species of employee with no others to talk with and learn from.In the latest Women in the Workplace report by LeanIn.Org and McKinsey Co., more than 64,000 employees and 279 companies weighed in on their experiences at work, and for too many, their careers were a story of isolation and stalled progression. One in five women said they were the only woman in the room at work. This excluding experience became more pronounced for women of color and lesbian women. Forty-five percent of women of color said they were the only rolle of their race in work situations, and 76% of lesbian women reported being the only one of their sexual orientation. It is too common for women to be only oneIdentifying as an only had disastrous consequences for womens careers. Women who were surrounded by men in the offic e became 1.5 times more likely to consider quitting their job. They also experienced sexual harassment and microaggressions at a higher rate. When women were onlies, they said they needed to provide more evidence of their competence, were more likely to be addressed in a less-than-professional way, and were more likely to have their judgment questioned, compared to women who had other women at work. When you are the only one of your kind in the corner office or on a project, you lack allies and support that can foster your professional development. Studies have found that women keep women in male-dominated industries. To binnensee what you can become, it helps to have someone else like you live through it first. When there is only one woman on a team, the report found that the rest of the workplace is more likely to project all their hopes and anxieties about women onto that one woman. While they are just one person, they often become a stand-in for all women- their individual success es or failures become a litmus test for what all women are capable of doing. With everyones eyes on them, women Onlys can be heavily scrutinized and held to higher standards. When asked about their experience of being an only, the top feeling women reported was a pressure to perform. As one black woman who worked as a mid-level administrator put it,the pressure to excel can be heavy. I have to be on all the time, she wrote. Because in the back of someones mind, they could be judging the entire race based on me. And I dont want anybody elses opportunity to be ruined because I messed it up. I know that seems really heavy, but that is often how I feel.Men who were surrounded by women had a more welcoming experience. For men who identified as an only on their team, their top takeaway about the experience was feeling included and fortunate to be on the team. The report is an annual snapshot of womens progress in leadership, and despite the report maintaining urgency for more company inves tment in womens careers, progress remains stalled. For Facebook COO and LeanIn.org founder Sheryl Sandberg, this needs to change for any progress to stick There is a disconnect in corporate America, she wrote in a Facebook post about the report. Year after year, companies report that they are highly committed to gender diversity. But the proportion of women in their organizations barely budges. For this to change, companies need to treat gender diversity like the business imperative it is.Marie-Claude Nadeau, a partner at McKinsey San Francisco, told Ladders that facilitating more ways for women to collaborate and grow together can be part of the solution. Senior women are twice as likely to be Onlys. One possible solution is for companies to think about grouping women at senior levels, promoting more women in cohorts rather than focusing on having the one token woman in every promotion or hiring slate, she said. At a minimum, companies need to provide opportunities for women to int eract at work. Second, employers can foster a culture where it is acceptable, expected and rewarded to interrupt biases and microaggressions when they happen - because we know those are more common for women Onlys.
